Margarita's beaches vary from normally calm seas on the south side, to waves high enough for surfing on the northeast and eastern sides. While areas such as El Yaque are very shallow for about 1/2 mile offshore, El Agua waters deepen more quickly. Visitors need to be aware that quite often, some areas of Playa El Agua have a dangerous undertow, and several unwary tourists have drowned due to not having knowledge of this occasional problem.
