Don't be afraid of renting a car and traveling around the island. All of the main roads are kept in good condition, and gas is readily available all over the island. You will find gas prices as low as anyplace in the world. Even if the attendant doesn't speak English, just show them the grade of gas you want on the pump and tell them "full". Most everyone understands that. Since what you owe is listed on the pump, paying is an easy process also.
